Plattenspieler Thorens

Exactly 74 years after the Thorens company was founded in 1883 in the Swiss town of Ste Croix, the era of Thorens record players began in 1957. In the following decades, these led the Thorens brand to world fame. A major contribution to this was the record player model TD 124, which was intended for professional use and within a short time became a great success with private music lovers as well. In the late 1960s, Thorens developed the spring-loaded Subchassi, which became an absolute world success.

In the 1990s, Thorens also came under great pressure due to the CD that was conquering the market at that time. This led to the unavoidable bankruptcy of Thorens Vertriebs GmbH in 2000. This marked the end of an era in consumer electronics.

But Thorens lives on: Heinz Rohrer, a Swiss businessman who had already been selling Thorens in Asia in the 1990s, acquires the brand and becomes its new owner. In the following years, new products come onto the market, designed by various developers and produced in Germany.

Following the sale of Thorens by Heinz Rohrer in 2018 to former Elac Electroacustic managing director Gunter Kürten, the Thorens brand returns to Germany on 01 May 2018. The newly founded Thorens GmbH now starts production in Bergisch Gladbach. The quick return to the successful Thorens "DNA", and a consequent further development of the Thorens brand, is the basis of the company's success.
